Saddam was a Jackass, but…
by casey on Jun.15, 2005, under Political Maundering
So quick question, how many Kurds were caught up in the war between Iran and Iraq? Granted, Saddam was a horrible, brutal dictator, but comparing the 5,000 Kurdish deaths in 1988 under Saddam’s rule to the 20,000 Iraq civilian deaths now makes one wonder if the stability under the dictatorship wasn’t safer than the chaos of the current “democracy”.
Jacko Trial Over, Back to Your Regular Scheduled Programming
by casey on Jun.15, 2005, under Random Thoughts
When is the “media” actually going to start reporting the news?
Top story today, “Schiavo Autopsy Shows Massive Brain Damage.” Once again they successfully covered up the real news. If you carefully look deep inside cnn.com you can find it “Restaurant bombing kills 23 Iraqi soldiers.” Yesterday the Jacko verdict covered up “19 Killed in Blast Outside Kirkuk Bank.”
It’s been so long since I’ve seen some real news that I don’t even know what the hell is really going on in the world. Are we still at war in Iraq? Oh we are?! I thought that was over a few years ago. I had no idea. So then what is the official body count? Huh, who would have thought. Well at least I can surely tell you that Shiavo’s brain was officially mush — ’cause that is pretty damn important.

William Pryor for the Circuit Court of Appeals
by casey on Jun.09, 2005, under Senate Now Debating
Did you know?
- Pryor has called Roe v. Wade “the worst abomination of constitutional law in our history” and has supported efforts to erect unconstitutional barriers to the exercise of reproductive freedom. He defended a “partial-birth abortion” ban in Alabama, although it lacked the constitutionally required exception to protect the health of the pregnant woman.
- Pryor believes that it is constitutional to imprison gay men and lesbians for having sex in the privacy of their own homes, and has filed a brief urging the Supreme Court to uphold Texas’ “Homosexual Conduct law,” which criminalizes such conduct. Pryor believes that singling out gay men and lesbians in this manner does not violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. In the same brief, Pryor equated for purposes of legal analysis sex between two adults of the same gender with “activities like prostitution, adultery, necrophilia, bestiality, possession of child pornography, and even incest and pedophilia…”
- When the Supreme Court of the United States created a temporary moratorium on the death penalty in Alabama to determine if the electric chair was cruel and unusual, Pryor lashed out stating “the death penalty moratorium movement is headed by an activist minority with little concern for what is really going on in our criminal justice system.”
- Pryor has supported the efforts of Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore to display a nearly three-ton granite monument of the Ten Commandments in the rotunda of the state Judicial Building, a display ruled unconstitutional by a federal district court. More than forty Alabama clergy and other religious leaders, including Christian clergy, have opposed Moore’s monument as a violation of the separation of church and state.
- Pryor also argued that states’ execution of mentally retarded inmates did not violate the U.S. Constitution. The U.S. Supreme Court, in Atkins v. Virginia, again rejected Pryor’s argument, and prohibited all states from executing the mentally retarded.

Coldplay’s Album Cover Decoded
by casey on Jun.09, 2005, under Drunken Rambling

So after reading MTV’s explanation of the new Coldplay album cover and following their “shown work,” I was still confused. From what I gather, the Baudot Code is character set based on five bits. I think of it as Morse code’s ugly cousin. So while reading the “shown work” my eyes kept scanning from left to right. This perplexed me since I noticed they were only using four bits per line. Finally I had an ‘AHH HA’ moment and noticed you read the five bits top to bottom. … Duh … That makes a little more sense but now I am confused as to how the “shown work” maps to the cover image. My confusion is based in the fact that all the bits aren’t equal length. The last (top) bit in a letter seems to be too short. Is this just for looks or does it have a meaning? Well anyway… if you disregard that, it seems to work out sweet. I also noticed MTV claims the back of the album says “MAKE TRADE FAIR” which is a common theme from the group. I have to say I do really like to see musicians and actors stepping up and helping out with the world’s bigger issues. |
Senator Kay O’Connor (R-Olathe, Kansas) Against Nineteenth Amendment, but Running for Secretary of State?!
by casey on Jun.03, 2005, under People are Idiots
How can a woman run for (and currently hold) a state elected position if you don’t support suffrage? The logic escapes me. Is she saying that she supports women working in the government — if a man says she can?
Her words (on Sept. 28th, 2001), not mine, about women’s suffrage:
“We have a society that does tear families apart … I think the 19th Amendment, while it’s not an evil in and of itself, is a symptom of something I don’t approve of.”
(The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1920, gave women the right to vote nationwide.)
“The 19th Amendment is around because men weren’t doing their jobs, and I think that’s sad. I believe the man should be the head of the family. The woman should be the heart of the family.
If I don’t get re-elected, my only punishment is to go home to my husband and my roses and my children and my grandchildren … And if the trips to Topeka get to be too much and my husband asks me to quit, I would.”

JUnit 4.0 Being Built
by casey on Jun.02, 2005, under Software Digression
Sounds like Kent Beck and Erich Gamma are back in the lab working on JUnit 4.0. They are looking to “evolve JUnit in a test-driven way” as well as trying to leverage the Java 5 annotations.
Here is the interview by Bill Venners.

disassemble or dissemble
THE PRESIDENT: I’m aware of the Amnesty International report, and it’s absurd. It’s an absurd allegation. The United States is a country that is — promotes freedom around the world. When there’s accusations made about certain actions by our people, they’re fully investigated in a transparent way. It’s just an absurd allegation.
In terms of the detainees, we’ve had thousands of people detained. We’ve investigated every single complaint against the detainees. It seemed like to me they based some of their decisions on the word of — and the allegations — by people who were held in detention, people who hate America, people that had been trained in some instances to disassemble — that means not tell the truth. And so it was an absurd report. It just is. And, you know — yes, sir.
Actually Mr. President… Don’t you mean dissemble?
I have a great idea, let’s go to Mars.
by casey on Jun.01, 2005, under People are Idiots
Just a question, but could we possibly take care of the health care system before we send people to Mars? I’m all for research and development, but come on. Let’s put some money into social security. Let’s put some money into Medicare and Medicaid. Let’s put some money into NCLB. Don’t spend money on a Mars trip until we take care of the 35.9 38 million Americans living in poverty.
