My new notebook arrived yesterday after a small crisis. Apparently the UPS driver was in such a hurry he didn’t bother knocking or ringing the doorbell and just left a “tried to deliver slip” on my front door. The annoying part is that Bipin and I were home all afternoon in anticipation of this delivery. I purposely wasn’t listening to music or doing anything loud just to make sure I wouldn’t miss his arrival. Thanks to Erin who noticed at 4:07 on UPS’s website that they tried and failed to deliver the package. I immediately (at 4:08) called UPS and they said the driver tried to deliver the package at 3:32 but no one was home. I said that’s funny because I’ve been sitting here, waiting, all day long. Needless to say I was furious. The customer service representative said he would call the local office and try to have the driver make another stop. Well the driver showed up a little before 5, I signed the broke-ass electronic clipboard, and got my new computer.

This morning when I got into the office I started thinking about how pissed I was yesterday. I decided to look at UPS’s delivery status website just to see what it said. I was amazed to find that

ASSCLOWN received a package yesterday. I know I had problems signing the electronic clipboard thingy… but… I hardly believe my scribble looked anything like “ASSCLOWN.” See for yourself. My tracking number is 1Z 90X 310 39 4516 857 6 I’m just trying to decide if this falls in the realms of a slander lawsuit.

According to Rick Scarborough, a prominent member of the Christian right, this disaster was brought upon ourselves by doing such things as supporting the Jewish pullout of the Gaza Strip, promoting gay marriage and unorthodox sex acts. Really?! I almost forgot God IS vengeful. He drowned all the people on earth (minus Noah and all the animals – which was only like 1.5 million known and named today) in a great flood and he waxed a bunch of people in Sodom and Gomorrah.

And Steve Lefemine, an anti-abortion activist, is blaming the disaster on the sinful acts of abortion in New Orleans.

If these acts don’t make use fearful, I don’t know what he needs to do. One would think the fear of living for eternity in hell with all the wailing and gnashing of teeth would be enough to scare people straight. Maybe he will deem a massive San Franciscan earthquake in order to really take care of the gays. Or maybe it will come in the form of another terrorist attack. I don’t think it will be that bad though, I suspect people are slowly but surely getting his message.

The logic escapes me. Is she saying that she supports women working in the government — if a man says she can?

Her words (on Sept. 28th, 2001), not mine, about women’s suffrage:

“We have a society that does tear families apart … I think the 19th Amendment, while it’s not an evil in and of itself, is a symptom of something I don’t approve of.”

(The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1920, gave women the right to vote nationwide.)

“The 19th Amendment is around because men weren’t doing their jobs, and I think that’s sad. I believe the man should be the head of the family. The woman should be the heart of the family.

If I don’t get re-elected, my only punishment is to go home to my husband and my roses and my children and my grandchildren … And if the trips to Topeka get to be too much and my husband asks me to quit, I would.”

It seemed like to me they based some of their decisions on the word of — and the allegations — by people who were held in detention, people who hate America, people that had been trained in some instances to disassemble — that means not tell the truth. And so it was an absurd report. It just is. And, you know — yes, sir.

Actually Mr. President… Don’t you mean dissemble?

Why is it that it always seems like the world is going two steps forward one step back? Ok. I’ll just lay it out… ignorant people should not be allowed to “judge” things they do not have the slightest clue about.

For anyone that does not already know, PGP is used for encryption of many things, including but definitely not limited to, sensitive financial data, medical records, diaries, and email. It also can be used to encrypt things like terrorist recruiting books, child pornography, and probably the anarchist cookbook. Once again the technology is ambivalent to what it is used for (see p2p”>see p2p). Take away PGP now and soon you will need to take away all strong encryption. Do that and eventually you will need to get rid of SSL leading to the demise of e-commerce. Just because a person has PGP on their computer does not make that person a criminal. (Shit, I have PGP on my computer right now!) It would be like trying to link a person with a large fireproof safe in his closet to the theft of “The Scream.”

Minnesota court takes dim view of encryption
Published: May 24, 2005, 3:02 PM PDT

By Declan McCullagh
Staff Writer, CNET News.com

A Minnesota appeals court has ruled that the presence of encryption software on a computer may be viewed as evidence of criminal intent.

Ari David Levie, who was convicted of taking illegal photographs of a nude 9-year-old girl, argued on appeal that the PGP encryption utility on his computer was irrelevant and should not have been admitted as evidence during his trial. PGP stands for Pretty Good Privacy and is sold by PGP Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif.

But the Minnesota appeals court ruled 3-0 that the trial judge was correct to let that information be used when handing down a guilty verdict.

“We find that evidence of appellant’s Internet use and the existence of an encryption program on his computer was at least somewhat relevant to the state’s case against him,” Judge R.A. Randall wrote in an opinion dated May 3.
Why FCC is targeting VoIP 911 calls

Randall favorably cited testimony given by retired police officer Brooke Schaub, who prepared a computer forensics report–called an EnCase Report–for the prosecution. Schaub testified that PGP “can basically encrypt any file” and “other than the National Security Agency,” nobody could break it.

The court didn’t say that police had unearthed any encrypted files or how it would view the use of standard software like OS X’s FileVault. Rather, Levie’s conviction was based on the in-person testimony of the girl who said she was paid to pose nude, coupled with the history of searches for “Lolitas” in Levie’s Web browser.

Judge Thomas Bibus had convicted Levie of two counts of attempted use of a minor in a sexual performance and two counts of solicitation of a child to engage in sexual conduct. The appeals court reversed the two convictions for attempted use of a minor, upheld the two solicitation convictions, and sent the case back to Bibus for a new sentence.
